LOS ANGELES, June 11 (Reuters) - U.S. Marines will join National Guard troops on the streets of Los Angeles within two days, officials said on Wednesday, and would be authorized to detain anyone who interferes with immigration officers on raids or protesters who confront federal agents.

Did President Trump send the U.S. military to Los Angeles earlier this week to safeguard the city from protesters? Or is this the start of something bigger — an unprecedented push by the president to carry out mass deportations with the help of armed troops?

Police and elected officials say the troops and Marines sent by the Trump administration are not properly trained to interact with civilians. A judge will decide whether to limit their duties.
