Carlos Santana had a two-run double in the fourth inning, Angel Martínez hit a solo shot in the fifth and Tanner Bibee threw seven scoreless innings to lead the Cleveland Guardians in a 7-0 win over the Detroit Tigers.
Tigers starter Jack Flaherty froze José Ramírez with a 95 mph fastball in the first inning to earn his 1,000th career strikeout. But Carlos Santana drove a 3-1 slider into the right-center gap for a two-run double in the fourth inning to give Cleveland a 2-0 lead. Ángel Martínez added a solo homer in the fifth.
Hays homered on the first pitch he saw from Bibee in the bottom of the third to give the Reds a 5-0 lead. Will Brennan prevented it from being 6-0 when he threw out Lux at home on a fly out hit to right by Stephenson for a 9-2 double play to end the inning.
Stephen Vogt quipped Thursday afternoon that June 15 was the first day he would begin looking at the standings this season. It was an arbitrary date offered by the Guardians' manager -- in tongue-in-cheek fashion -- as he remains focused on taking things one day at a time.
