UAE oil giant ADNOC has joined the fray of firms said to be circling some of BP 's highly prized assets, as takeover speculation for the embattled energy major kicks into overdrive.

Shell, however, denied talks were talking place. BP shares retreated and closed up 1.64% at $30.32. "This is further market speculation. No talks are taking place," a Shell spokesperson told CNBC.
