Officials with the New York City Police Department (NYPD) confirmed a helicopter was in the water, as of 3:40 p.m. "Due to a helicopter crash in the Hudson River, in the vicinity of the West Side Highway and Spring Street, expect emergency vehicles and traffic delays in the surrounding areas," according to a statement from the NYPD.
It’s a landmark that’s been a destination for generations of schoolchildren, history buffs, experts and others, but the New York City Fire Museum has been closed for nearly a year, due to structural problems.
The Police Department is investigating whether the officers left the scene without reporting the crash. Two New York police officers were suspended after chasing a stolen SUV that was found engulfed in flames early Wednesday morning with the driver dead inside, officials said.
A construction project caused $6 million in damage and closed the New York City Fire Museum nearly a year ago.
