A bird flu-related shutdown of all live poultry markets in New York City, Westchester County and Long Island starts today.

The order, signed by New York Gov. Kathy Hochul Hochul on Friday, requires the markets to close for a week as facilities undergo a complete disinfection process.

The order also temporarily shuts down all bird markets in Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk counties after 7 cases were detected in NYC poultry.

The unusual order follows an outbreak of bird flu at an Aquebogue duck farm and detections of the disease in markets in Queens, the Bronx and Brooklyn.

All live poultry markets in New York City and Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk counties of New York were shut down Friday after seven cases of avian flu were detected at markets in the five boroughs during routine inspections, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said during a public health briefing.

There’s currently no mandate from the state for chicken markets to shut down. However, the state’s Department of Agriculture has asked for those businesses to do a voluntary cleaning.
