Once the shellac has dried, it is time to apply a total coat of a universal primer such as Kilz, Zinner or 123 Bullseye. Now you can apply the paint and be assured of a uniform look.

Also, shellac that is sold as a liquid in a can has a shelf life. “As the product ages in the can, it loses its quick dry/quick sanding abilities,” says finishing expert Bernie Bottens.
