The penultimate full moon of summer — known as the sturgeon moon — will officially reach its peak early in the morning Saturday, Aug. 9.

In a rare skywatching treat, you can see August's full Sturgeon Moon rise soon after sunset on both Saturday, Aug. 9 and Sunday, Aug. 10.

The Sturgeon Moon is best seen from an elevated location, like an open field or an east-facing coastline with a clear view of the eastern horizon. While the naked eye works for this annual lunar event, binoculars or a small telescope can offer a much better view.
