Former longtime Moeller football coach Gerry Faust has died at the age of 89. He led the Crusaders to four mythical national championships and five state titles.

The man who built a small school football program on Montgomery Road into a national high school powerhouse by the mid-1970s died Monday at age 89. Gerry Faust was Moeller High School's first head coach.

Faust, also known as "Fuzzy," spent 18 years as Moeller's head coach before leaving to coach at the University of Notre Dame. He finished with a record of 178-23-2, Moeller reported.

Jumping from the high school ranks to lead one of the most storied programs in college football, he lost games but rarely lost hope.
