W ASHINGTON—The GOP-controlled Congress canceled $9 billion in federal spending for foreign aid and public broadcasting, following through on President Trump’s efforts to defund the programs and overcoming some resistance among Republican lawmakers.

The US House of Representatives has passed a bill allowing Congress to claw back billions in pre-approved funding for public broadcasting and foreign aid.

Immediately after the vote, NPR CEO Katherine Maher issued a statement calling the cut an "irreversible loss" to the public radio system.

Proponents of the legislation have argued that the bill would help modernize America’s financial system and break down the barriers between existing financial markets and cryptocurrency.

Lawmakers in the US have passed the country's first major national cryptocurrency legislation.

Since the GENIUS Act, a bill aimed at regulating stablecoins, already passed by the Senate, the House vote now sends the bill to the executive branch to sign into law.
