Zelenskyy's previous White House visit ended in acrimony. This time, both he and Trump seemed determined to avoid a public debacle.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy is headed to the White House today along with other European leaders to meet with President Trump after his summit on Friday with Russia President Putin. NBC News' Yamiche Alcindor and Matt Bodner report the latest.
Just after noon, European leaders including Macron, Starmer, von der Leyen, Rutte, and Meloni began arriving one by one at the White House. According to the White House schedule, Trump will first meet with Zelensky at 1:15 p.m. before greeting the European leaders, followed by a multilateral meeting with all parties at 3:00 p.m.
The rumor referenced the last time Zelenskyy visited the White House, in February 2025, when he faced criticism from conservatives and some reporters for wearing a full-sleeve black polo shirt emblazoned with Ukraine's coat of arms instead of a suit. The rumor appeared to originate from a post on X that was repeated on tabloid site Daily Express.
The U.S. president welcomed the Ukrainian leader at the door of the West Wing. Trump pumped his fist as Zelenskyy’s vehicle pulled up, then shook hands with him.
